The Technologies Business Practice is focused on the development, commercialization, and delivery of technologies, as well as specialized services, across all three of Hatch’s sectors: Metals, Energy, Infrastructure. We’re a team of innovators and problem solvers who deliver custom and specialized engineering to deliver novel solutions, technologies and services. The Specialised Engineering team includes a diverse and experienced team of engineers and designers with a variety of expertise in advanced analysis, design methods and heavy experience developing designs all the way from ideation / concept to commissioning.   

Reporting to Managers or Directors within the Specialised Engineering group, and Project Managers as appropriate, you will support projects globally based out of our Mississauga location.

The Role (includes but is not limited to):

• Ideation, conceptual layout, and detailed design of custom machine designs / mechanical systems and proprietary Hatch equipment
• Apply engineering principles and perform calculations for custom mechanical equipment, including statics, dynamics, thermal analysis, fluids analysis, fluid power, and Finite Element Analysis
• First-principles assessment of phenomena such as creep, fatigue, buckling, and other conditions experienced by materials under high stress, temperature, and pressure
• Assist the Engineering Manager/Project Manager with the delivery of proposal or project requirements as they relate to scope, cost, and schedule
• Prepare or contribute to documents such as: Proposal, Cost Estimate, Design Basis, Mechanical Design Criteria, Operating Philosophy, Operations and Maintenance Manual, Specification, Report, Trade-off study, and presentation
• 3D model preparation as well as drawing production and review using 3D CAD packages such as Solid Edge and Inventor
• Evaluate equipment/technology selection trade-off studies, including evaluation of suitable materials of construction, constructability assessments, vendor/fabrication shop sourcing
• Collaborate with process, structural and control system engineers and designers in the detailed design of custom equipment, including equipment design reviews, design development and process hazard review studies
• Provide site support, including field verification during construction and vendor fabrication assistance
• Review the work of other engineers and designers
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to students or more junior staff
• Carry out assigned tasks within budget and on schedule

 About you:                                                                                

• Track record of significant achievements
• Mechanical Engineering Degree (or equivalent) from an accredited University
• At least some industry experience (pre-graduation experience qualifies)
• Intent to register with the PEO and become a licensed P.Eng.
• Excellent written and oral English communication skills
• Demonstrated critical and creative thinking and problem solving, and brings forward creative solutions for our clients' toughest challenges
• Strong analytical abilities
• Willingness and ability to travel to project sites including remote sites
• Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills
• Strong customer/client and safety focus
• Breadth and depth of practical experience
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects
• Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate activities between disciplines
• Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions
• Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the mechanical engineering discipline
• Working knowledge of 3D data centric design systems and associated deliverables (3D parametric modeling, live-views, complex fabrication and assembly drawings, etc.)
• Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident who has lived in Canada for at least three years
• Dedication to continuous learning
