The Industrial Energy Efficiency Manager will work within a multi-disciplinary team to support both the execution of secured projects and business development activities to grow the pipeline of opportunities within the US and Canadian regions. This role can be based out of several Hatch offices across the US or Canada.
While the variable nature of opportunities make it difficult to define the specific projects the Specialist would either lead or support, the following are some examples:
Industrial and commercial (I&C) building energy efficiency, performance, and air & noise quality audits, and recommendations for improvement;
Building energy efficiency improvement projects or similar ‘deep energy retrofit’ projects
Working with SMEs from Hatch’s Climate Change Practice, support energy inputs to Scope 1, 2, & 3 emission calculations, and recommendations for Carbon reduction actions;
Supporting I&C building design teams and architects, provide key inputs on energy performance and carbon reduction measures, making sound recommendations for cost efficiencies and improvements during the design and equipment selection phase;
Reviewing design documents (plans, specifications, shop drawings) either developed in-house, or by clients, to ensure that the intended energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures are being fully incorporated into the designs;
Create, revise, and follow best practices for energy simulation models, updating information as designs evolve, or system adjustments and expansions are made;
Working with power sector SMEs, determine electric load estimate for demand response (DR) opportunities as bid into local utility programs;
Working with SMEs from Hatch’s digital team, support the development and integration of energy management tools into digital twins, building or campus level energy management tools, demand response platforms, or other digital solutions, including the customization of such platforms to meet client needs;
Lead independent engineering (IE) and lender’s technical advisor (LTA) projects as and when energy efficiency/retrofit projects are the subject of project financing activities.
Lead the identification and interactions of potential project partners
Lead, or take a senior role, in the development of Energy master plans
Project delivery responsibilities may include:
As a key team resource, solve challenging client problems that could include planning, business case development, implementation, monitoring, or assessments of any project scopes referenced above, or related opportunities as they arise;
For smaller to medium projects, the Specialist may become responsible for day-to-day project management functions, while also delivering on client expectations;
For larger projects, the Specialist may lead smaller work packages or support the advancement and creation of project deliverables;
Deliver tasks in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Hatch’s policies and procedures, including Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance, & Quality Control;
Work alongside and/or support delivery of projects from other Hatch teams, as applicable
Experience and knowledge that the Specialist would be expected to both bring to the team and further develop while in the position includes:
energy modeling and analysis on greenfield building and campus development
energy master plan creation
calculating Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions within I&C buildings and campuses
familiarity with geothermal, geoexchange, district energy, and other low and zero-carbon heat and electric supply technologies
Awareness of provincial, state, and federal energy efficiency plans, targets, and funding opportunities for client’s projects
strategic view on helping clients decarbonize through energy efficiency, renewables integration, and innovative out of the box solutions to ultimately achieve net-zero operations
expand project pipelines as we continue to build practical solutions that are safe, innovative, and sustainable
A strong candidate would have at least several of the following qualifications:
Total industry experience of at least 10 years
Experience with building energy modeling (at least 6 years) using industry standard software such as IES-VE, eQuest, EnergyPlus, or TRNSYS along with an undergraduate degree in System or Mechanical Engineering, Applied Science, or equivalent qualifications;
Experience with regional and national reference standards such as NECB, ASHRAE 90.1, Toronto Green Standard or BC Step Code;
Fundamental understanding of mechanical systems and HVAC equipment;
Understanding and knowledge of Architectural, Mechanical / Electrical Drawings;
Experience with Building Energy Management Systems, lighting design, electrical design, and thermal energy management
Previous design, construction, or project management experience on new construction or major renovation projects with important sustainability and energy efficiency objects such as LEED, Zero Carbon Building Standard, Passive House, or mass-timber an asset;
Familiarity or experience with GBCI Investor Ready Energy Efficiency (IREE) certification and/or existing qualification as a Quality Assurance Assessor
Proficient with design and drafting tools such as AutoCad, MicroStation, or Revit
Proficient with the MS Office suite of products
A team-oriented mindset; a self-starter that meets deadlines, takes initiative, is organized, but also knows when to ask for help and support others when they need your knowledge
Maintain a continuous desire to improve and enhance your skills through staying current on industry trends, technical codes, and
Strong communicator in written materials such as reports, through internal and client or conference presentations, and verbally amongst the team, with juniors that you mentor, and management
Maintain a Certified Energy Management (CEM) designation and other professional designations such as a P.Eng./PE., and PMP
