Reporting to Project Director, as Design Manager – Stations, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers and architects to deliver high-quality transit station design for our clients while adhering to technical requirements, schedule and commercial objectives. Our projects involve at-grade and underground transit stations, and intermodal transfer centres. The core responsibilities of the role include design leadership, project management, and client management.
A successful Design Manager will exhibit high emotional aptitude and empathetic leadership characteristics while demonstrating technical expertise.
As the successful candidate, you will:
• Be accountable for developing or verifying technical scope of a project and working with discipline leads to conceptualize technical components.
• Responsible to provide pricing during proposals, and subsequent work planning following project award to initiate design activities.
• Responsible for alignment of scheduled deliverables with Project Management Team and preparation of the design criteria for the discipline leads.
• Lead the design development and manage design teams and designers from feasibility/concept design through detailed design to Issue For Construction (IFC), lead the creation of design work plan and level of effort.
• Lead the detailed design of transit stations delivered under various procurement models including Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Construction Manager At Risk, Progressive Design-Build, and Alliance/Integrated Project Delivery (IPD).
• Manage a complete design lifecycle that considers project requirements, stakeholder obligations, client expectations, quality standards, and discipline-specific workflows.
• Develop and implement design management plans and contribute to project-wide management plans.
• Ensure fluid communication between the project management team, design team, partners and stakeholders.
• Chair design review workshops and coordinate associated inter-disciplinary review processes to gather conformance and constructability commentary, bring forward update and any critical issues to project management team.
• Resolve technical issues and navigate uncertainty related to compliance and application of codes and standards.
• Enforce design quality and governance policies and promote best-practices among design team members.
• Coordinate design compliance through verification and validation of performance specifications.
• Identify value added design changes to positively support design-build projects across all disciplines.
• Verify the design schedule and budget matches the progress of professional services throughout execution. Control design budgets and associated scopes of work during the project.
• Coordinate construction phasing and mobility matters requirements with construction advisors to the extent related to design.
• Ensure change management processes are followed and contribute to change management activities including proactive change identification, quantification, impact assessment, and implementation strategies.
• Contribute to the project risk management processes and proactively identify design risks.
• Participate in Hatch’s Global Community of Practice (CoP) for Design Managers, including mentoring of Design Managers and Coordinators within the Transit Business Unit.
• During construction, responsible for liaison between contract administrator and engineering team. Coordinate issue resolution due to non-compliances with the drawings and specifications on site.
You will bring to the role:
• Degree in Engineering or Architecture
• P.Eng. or OAA designation
• Minimum 10 years of civil or architectural design lead on major infrastructure projects spanning feasibility/concept through detailed design to IFC, of which at least 5 years are specific to multi-disciplinary transit stations design management.
• Expert knowledge of engineering/architectural design processes required for transit stations as well as a thorough understanding of guideway design, track design, systems design, and design integration.
• Knowledge of Metrolinx and TTC design standards as well as Municipal, Provincial and National codes, standards and guidelines.
• Due diligence and review of designs provided by team engineers as well as subconsultants, performing quality control reviews of work performed by others.
• Excellent analytical skills to support detailed design projects with the ability to handle complex problem-solving tasks, proposing alternative solutions and solving design challenges.
• Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software (Civil 3D, Autocad, Revit, BIM360), and other applicable common software.
• Ability to read an interpret construction documents, drawings and specifications including design and construction schedules using MS Project and Primavera P6.
• Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to lead and manage teams, confidently present and defend recommendations and initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities in personnel management, decision making, mentorship, and performance management.
• A high emotional quotient (EQ) that can be applied to build relationships, motivate teams, inspire achievement and promote inclusion among team members. increase team efficiency, and aid in conflict resolution.
• Maintains integrity when conducting business and when leading their team, with skills in conflict resolution.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with Contractor-led collaborative delivery models (Alliance/ IPD, Progressive Design-Build, etc.)
• PMP® designation or equivalent experience/skills to obtain the PMP®
• LEED certified professional designation and LEED design experience.
• Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) designation
• Ability to navigate design and construction schedules using MS Project and Primavera P6.
• Experience with SharePoint and the full suite of Office365 products, including PowerBI.
